Gunman Targeted Top Officials at Trump Gala, Investigators Say

Investigators say the man who attempted to break into a high-profile gala attended by Donald Trump was likely aiming at senior government officials, raising serious concerns about security at the event.

The incident happened at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, where Trump was quickly escorted out of the ballroom by Secret Service agents after gunfire broke out.

According to authorities, the suspect tried to rush past a security checkpoint before being confronted by armed guards. A shootout followed, after which he was overpowered and arrested at the scene. He is expected to face charges in federal court.

Todd Blanche said early findings suggest the attacker may have been targeting members of the administration, though his exact motive is still unclear. He added that the suspect has not been cooperating with investigators.

The man, reportedly armed with multiple weapons including a shotgun, handgun, and knives, was staying at the Washington Hilton, where the black-tie event took place. Authorities believe he travelled across several cities before arriving in Washington.

The chaotic scene forced guests—including top government officials and dignitaries—to take cover under tables as security agents moved in. Trump later said he initially thought the noise was something minor before realizing it was gunfire.

Speaking after the incident, Trump suggested the attacker may have acted alone, describing him as a possible “lone wolf.” One officer was injured during the confrontation but is expected to recover.

The situation has sparked fresh debate about security at major events, especially given the presence of high-ranking officials. The venue itself has a historical connection to past violence, as Ronald Reagan was shot there during an assassination attempt in 1981.

The suspect, identified by several reports as Cole Tomas Allen, is also being linked to a property in California, where federal agents have carried out a search.

This incident adds to a growing list of security threats involving Trump, including a previous assassination attempt during a 2024 rally in Pennsylvania.

The annual dinner, which brings together journalists, politicians, and public figures, is meant to celebrate journalism and raise funds for scholarships. However, this year’s event has now been overshadowed by the shocking security breach.
