Benue Farmers to Buy Fertiliser at N28,000 as Government Introduces Subsidy

The Benue State Government has announced a major subsidy programme that will allow farmers across the state to purchase fertiliser at N28,000 per bag ahead of the 2026 farming season.

Governor Hyacinth Alia made the announcement on Thursday during the launch of the state’s 2026 fertiliser and farm inputs sales and distribution exercise.

According to the governor, the actual cost of each bag of fertiliser is N56,000, but the state government will cover half of the amount, paying N28,000 on behalf of farmers to make the product more affordable.

Alia said the initiative is aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, reducing the cost of farming and supporting food production across the state.

He also warned officials involved in the distribution process against diversion and other forms of misconduct, stressing that the programme must be carried out with transparency and accountability.

“I charge you to discharge your responsibilities with integrity, professionalism and fairness. There should be no room for diversion, favouritism or exploitation,” the governor said.

He emphasised that all farm inputs provided under the programme must reach the intended beneficiaries and not be diverted for personal gain.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a modern and commercially viable sector capable of creating jobs, reducing poverty and stimulating economic growth in the state.

He disclosed that the government would continue investing in key agricultural infrastructure, including rural roads, irrigation facilities and water management systems to support all-season farming.

Alia further stated that efforts were being made to encourage agro-processing and value-addition initiatives that would help reduce post-harvest losses while increasing farmers’ earnings.

Addressing farmers, the governor assured them of continued government support and urged them to make good use of the subsidised inputs.

“To our hardworking farmers, your government stands firmly with you. We recognise your sacrifices, appreciate your contributions and remain committed to creating an environment where you can succeed,” he said.

He also encouraged farmers to cooperate with relevant authorities and follow established guidelines to ensure the success of the fertiliser distribution programme.

The launch comes as farmers across Benue State prepare for the commencement of the new planting season, with expectations that the subsidy will help increase food production and improve agricultural output.
