Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has described democracy as the most suitable system of government for Nigeria, saying it remains the strongest platform for managing the country’s ethnic, religious and cultural diversity.
In a Democracy Day message to Nigerians, the governor said June 12 represents more than a historic event, noting that it symbolises the sacrifices, struggles and aspirations of Nigerians in the pursuit of freedom, justice and representative governance.
Fubara paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola (MKO), his wife Kudirat Abiola and other pro-democracy activists whose efforts helped secure democratic rule in the country.
According to him, their courage and commitment to ensuring that power rests with the people continue to inspire Nigerians.
“June 12 is a reminder of the sacrifices made by Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola and many other patriots who laid the foundation for the democracy we enjoy today,” he said.
The governor noted that despite various challenges, Nigeria’s democratic journey has continued to grow over the years.
“Our democratic journey has not been without difficulties, but the resilience of our institutions and the determination of our people have kept the nation moving forward,” he stated.
He added that democracy remains one of Nigeria’s greatest achievements because it guarantees the freedom to express opinions, participate in political processes and choose leaders through the ballot box.
Fubara stressed that Nigeria’s diversity should be viewed as a strength rather than a weakness, arguing that democracy provides the framework needed to promote inclusion, national unity and sustainable development.
“Nigeria’s diversity should never be seen as a weakness. Properly harnessed, it is our greatest asset. Democracy gives us the opportunity to build consensus, encourage inclusion and create conditions for shared prosperity,” he said.

The Rivers governor also commended President Bola Tinubu for pursuing policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at strengthening the economy, improving security and deepening democratic governance.
He assured that Rivers State would continue to work with the Federal Government in areas such as infrastructure development, job creation, education, healthcare and security.
Fubara further urged Nigerians to use Democracy Day as an opportunity to renew their commitment to national unity and democratic values.
He said democracy should not be seen only as periodic elections but as a continuous commitment to accountability, transparency, justice, tolerance and respect for the rule of law.
Expressing optimism about the future, the governor called on citizens to remain hopeful and united in building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
“Together, we can build a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he said.
Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12 in honour of the historic 1993 presidential election and the sacrifices made by Nigerians in the struggle for democratic governance.
