After weeks of speculation and verbal sparring between the media aides of the incumbent Governor Alex Otti and his predecessor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the Abia State Government has finally released the much-anticipated forensic audit report of Ikpeazu’s administration. The 360-page dossier was unveiled by the Commissioner of Information, Prince Okey Kanu, after a State Executive Council meeting press briefing on Monday night.
The document, compiled by renowned global audit firm Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG), details various financial transactions and alleged infractions by the previous administration. It reveals that the administration authorized the release of N10 billion from the state coffers for the construction of Abia Airport, instructing the contractor to disburse the funds into 32 different accounts.
Former Governor Ikpeazu has denied any involvement in the airport contract, stating that at the request of traditional rulers, the funds were reallocated for road infrastructure development. In his statement, the Information Commissioner emphasized the need for the public to review the report and understand the facts instead of being swayed by propaganda.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, disclosed that individuals indicted by the report are already being invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He criticized the alleged mismanagement of N62 billion, including the N10 billion disbursed during a COVID-19 year for a non-existent airport.
Responding to questions about why the Governor opted for a forensic audit instead of relying on a probe panel, Ekeoma defended the decision, citing the need to eliminate doubts by engaging a reputable audit firm with a track record of competence and integrity.
Ekeoma urged those implicated to present their defense to the EFCC rather than engaging in a media war. He also clarified that the government's request for workers to upload their credentials online is not a verification exercise, contrary to claims by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). He attributed delays in verification to issues like errors in Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) and joint accounts, assuring workers of the government's commitment to their welfare.
