Abia State Governor Appeals for Peace Ahead of Planned #EndBadGovernance Protest

Abia

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community leaders to counsel their communities against resorting to violence amidst the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest planned for August 1, 2024. During a statewide broadcast, Governor Otti emphasized the potential for the protest to escalate into violence, which could endanger vulnerable individuals.

While recognizing the right of Nigerians to protest against unfavorable conditions, Governor Otti expressed concerns that the protest could be hijacked by opportunists and hoodlums, undermining the original good intentions of the organizers. He urged youths to seek peaceful avenues to express their grievances, particularly in light of the federal government's economic policies, such as the removal of the fuel subsidy, which may not have yielded the intended results yet.

“Some economic policies of the federal government, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, may not have yet produced the desired results as initially intended, but I urge our youths to pursue peaceful means to express their grievances rather than resorting to violence,” he stated.

The governor advised the youth to exercise restraint and engage with leaders through a charter of demands. He pledged his administration's commitment to protecting the people from harm and maintaining order.

Governor Otti highlighted the need for peace and continued development, noting the significant investments made in infrastructure in Aba and Umuahia. He stressed the importance of safeguarding these investments from those who might exploit the protest to create chaos.

"Abia State civil servants have received the April tranche of the Wage Award, as promised by our administration, among other commitments. Therefore, I plead with Abia people to shun violence,” he added.

Governor Otti's appeal comes as part of broader efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of Abia residents, urging them to prioritize peaceful and constructive engagement over violence.
