ADC Leaders Say Tinubu Won’t Have Easy Path to Victory in 2027

Leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, have declared that President Bola Tinubu will face a tough challenge in the 2027 general elections.

They made this known during the party’s national convention held in Abuja, where they criticised the current administration over rising insecurity and economic hardship. According to them, Nigerians are going through unprecedented difficulties, and the situation demands urgent change.

Other prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, also expressed concern about the state of the nation. They argued that poverty has worsened significantly and security continues to deteriorate under the current government.

Despite the show of strength at the convention, the ADC remains divided. A rival faction led by Nafiu Bala rejected the Abuja gathering, describing it as illegitimate, and stated that it would organise its own convention after the Supreme Court delivers its judgment on the leadership dispute.

The party has been battling internal crises since 2025, with disagreements over leadership leading to multiple factions and ongoing court cases. The situation has raised concerns about the party’s readiness for the 2027 elections.

Still, at the convention, more than 3,000 delegates endorsed a National Working Committee led by David Mark and approved a revised party constitution and manifesto.

Speaking at the event, Mark insisted that the ADC remains strong despite the challenges. He said attempts to weaken the party have instead united its members and strengthened its resolve to provide a credible alternative for Nigerians.

Aregbesola, on his part, took a stronger stance, saying the current administration has failed to address key national issues. He argued that an honest leader in such a situation should step aside rather than seek re-election.

Atiku also called for accountability, particularly targeting the leadership of the electoral body, while urging Nigerians to support efforts to restore democratic values.

Peter Obi emphasised the need for unity, warning that division within the country could worsen the current challenges if not addressed. Amaechi added that Nigerians must take responsibility for demanding better governance, stressing that political power would not be handed over easily.

As the political landscape begins to take shape ahead of 2027, the ADC says it is positioning itself as a serious contender, even as internal disputes and legal battles continue to test its unity.
