African Nations Turn to Nigeria for High-Tech Military Hardware, Says Minister

Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that several African nations are now turning to Nigeria for high-tech military hardware, reflecting the growing capabilities of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON). The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, highlighted this development as a significant achievement under the leadership of the Ministry of Defence and the new DICON management, led by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

Matawalle emphasized that the increased patronage by African countries could significantly boost Nigeria's foreign exchange earnings, create jobs for skilled Nigerians, and reduce capital flight. This announcement was made during a press conference ahead of DICON's 60th anniversary celebration and the maiden Africa Defence Industries Conference and Exhibition in Abuja, which will feature over 150 foreign exhibitors.

The minister noted that DICON, established in 1964, has evolved from producing small arms and ammunition to manufacturing military vehicles, artillery, and other defense equipment. Despite facing challenges, DICON has remained committed to self-reliance and national security. The recent DICON Act 2023 is expected to further enhance the corporation's contributions to Nigeria's development and national security.

Matawalle assured the public that DICON's capabilities are robust, though details remain confidential for security reasons. He expressed optimism that the corporation's ongoing efforts would soon yield visible results, solidifying Nigeria's position as a key player in the global defense industry.

As DICON celebrates 60 years of service, the corporation's achievements underscore Nigeria's commitment to innovation, resilience, and self-reliance in defense production. The upcoming exhibition in Abuja is set to showcase DICON's advancements and further establish its role in supporting national security and economic growth.
