Mr. Oluwagbenga Abiola, Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government, has put his personal ambitions aside and fully backed the decision of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to field Abdulganiyu Obasa as the flagbearer for the upcoming July 12 council election. Abiola, who had previously expressed interest in becoming the next chairman, shocked many by throwing his support behind Obasa’s son, Abdulganiyu, in what is seen as a significant political shift.

In a candid interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, Abiola acknowledged the party’s decision and pledged his loyalty to both the APC and his long-time mentor, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. "I will never go against my leader, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa," Abiola affirmed. Despite his own aspirations, he stated that the collective decision made by the party and stakeholders, particularly the call for Obasa’s son to run, must be respected.

Abiola went on to reflect on the political support he has received from Obasa throughout his career, attributing his rise from Special Assistant on Media in 2015 to the Vice Chairman role to the Speaker’s endorsement. "Why would I oppose a man who built me politically?" he asked. He expressed confidence that his dedication to the party’s direction would eventually lead to greater opportunities in the future, while reiterating his commitment to securing victory for the APC in Agege.

Abiola’s endorsement of Abdulganiyu’s candidacy comes after Agege stakeholders rallied behind the Speaker’s son, calling it a deserved recognition for Obasa’s years of service. Abiola, who had aspired to the position of Chairman, now focuses on backing the party’s choice, signaling unity ahead of the election.
