Akwa Ibom Labour Unions Hold Out for N70,000 Minimum Wage, Await Government Decision

Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Government and organized labour are still negotiating a minimum wage for workers, with no specific amount agreed upon yet. Comrade Sunny James, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Akwa Ibom, revealed this on Saturday in Uyo, stating that discussions are ongoing, and an official announcement is expected within a week.

James assured that labour will not settle for anything below N70,000, though there is optimism that the government may offer a higher amount. He emphasized that the unions are carefully calculating to ensure a fair outcome for all workers.

A key concern for labour, according to James, is the consequential adjustments for senior civil servants. The new wage increment must reflect across all grade levels, ensuring equity in the pay structure.

While labour unions continue their engagement with the state government, James expressed confidence that the negotiations will yield a satisfactory result for all workers, particularly senior staff.
