ALGON Backs Tinubu for 2027, Suspends Three Council Chairmen

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has endorsed Bola Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The decision was reached during the association’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja, which brought together representatives from all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and former leaders of the body.

The meeting was chaired by ALGON’s National President, Bello Lawal. The motion to back Tinubu’s re-election bid was moved by former ALGON President Alabi Kolade David and seconded by the Plateau State ALGON chairman, Anani Hamisu Mohammed.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the association said its endorsement was based on the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which it believes has strengthened financial capacity and autonomy at the local government level. It added that continuity would help deepen grassroots governance across the country.

Meanwhile, ALGON also announced the suspension of three local government chairmen over alleged misconduct. Those affected are Zakari Iliyasu of Agwara LGA in Niger State, Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi of Kaiama LGA in Kwara State, and Abba Shehu Tambuwal of Tambuwal LGA in Sokoto State.

The association said the suspensions were due to impersonation, actions contrary to its interests, and abuse of constitutional provisions. It warned government agencies, state authorities, and development partners not to engage with the suspended officials, stressing that they no longer have the authority to act on its behalf.

ALGON also passed a vote of confidence in its national leadership, reaffirming its support for Lawal and pledging continued loyalty to the association’s direction.
