Two individuals were confirmed dead after a two-storey building collapsed at Ekeoyibo market, Amawbia in Anambra State on Thursday. The building, still under construction, suddenly crumbled at noon, trapping several traders and buyers inside. Anambra Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the deaths and stated that other trapped victims were rescued and are receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Rescue operations, supervised by security operatives, continued late into the night. The Deputy Commissioner of Police led an on-the-spot assessment and maintained order at the scene. The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and further details are awaited. This incident follows a series of recent building collapses in the state, raising concerns about construction safety standards.

Witnesses at the scene reported that more than two people might have died, with several others sustaining injuries. Trader Uche mentioned that the building gave no warning before collapsing, and another eyewitness, Nwafor, shared that one of the deceased was a neighbor, a civil defense officer, leaving behind four children.
The Anambra government has yet to release an official statement regarding the latest incident. However, ongoing investigations and calls for thorough probes are underway to prevent further tragedies and ensure safety in future construction projects.
