Anambra Police Arrest Principal Suspect in Murder of 74-Year-Old Woman

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested 33-year-old Obinna Anene, the principal suspect in the gruesome killing of 74-year-old Alice Anene in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area.

Horrific Murder and Failed Secret Burial

According to Anambra State Police Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was tracked and arrested after fleeing the scene of the crime.

  • On January 25, 2025, Anene allegedly conspired with three accomplices to burn Alice Anene alive in her wheelchair.
  • After killing her, the suspects reportedly procured a casket and were about to secretly bury her along with the wheelchair when police operatives were alerted.
  • The police intervened, arrested three suspects, and recovered:
    • The burnt remains of the victim.
    • The wheelchair.
    • A casket prepared for burial.
  • Obinna Anene managed to escape at the time, but the police have now tracked him down and arrested him.

Suspect Transferred to Homicide Unit

Following his arrest, Anene has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section in Awka, for further questioning and investigation.

SP Ikenga confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday:
"The suspect, Obinna Anene, 33, of Amene Village, Abagana, has been arrested and is being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, Awka, for a debrief. Further details will be communicated."
