The Anambra State Government has initiated an investigation into allegations that officials of the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) and police officers brutally assaulted Okey Akaneme, a former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture.
State Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odumegwu, confirmed the probe on Monday, stating that while the government prioritizes accountability, preliminary findings suggest ASWAMA officials may not be directly responsible.
“We must unravel the unfortunate incident. However, our immediate concern is the health of the victim. The government does not condone assault or touting, and any culpable agent will face the consequences,” Odumegwu said.
Akaneme was reportedly attacked on October 11 at his residence in Onitsha’s America Quarters by ASWAMA officials and two police officers over unpaid sanitation fees. Witness accounts claim the team forcibly entered his home and manhandled him, resulting in severe spinal injuries.
Close associate Okechukwu Ani narrated, “The team forced their way into Akaneme’s home early in the morning, disregarding his request to get ready. Amid protests from neighbors, they inflicted nearly fatal injuries, leaving him unable to move.”
Akaneme was initially treated at Holy Rosary Specialist Hospital, Onitsha, before being transferred to Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, where doctors confirmed 65% spinal damage. He is currently receiving advanced care at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu.
The incident, which has gone viral on social media, has drawn widespread condemnation from residents and human rights groups, who criticized the government’s initial silence.
Odumegwu disclosed that efforts are ongoing to reach Akaneme and prioritize his treatment. “The waste manager has also been trying empathically to contact him,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command has refrained from official comment, though a senior officer confirmed the case has been transferred to the State CID in Awka for further investigation.
Residents continue to demand transparency and justice for Akaneme as the probe unfolds.
