A violent attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen has left one person dead in Onoli, Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, sparking fear and anger among residents.
The victim, identified as Onuchukwu Ogbaki, a young man in his early 30s, was reportedly attacked on Friday while checking his farmland along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Highway, near the Enugu–Abia boundary.
According to community members, the attack was the latest in a string of violent incidents linked to herdsmen that have already forced many farmers in Obuovia village to abandon their lands. Residents say the repeated assaults have left them living in constant fear, threatening their lives and livelihoods.
A relative of the deceased, Sampson Okolie, confirmed the incident, saying Ogbaki died around 2 a.m. on Saturday at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, where he was taken for treatment after the attack.
“It’s true that Fulani herdsmen killed our brother,” Okolie said. “He went to check his farm, and they attacked him there. Most people have already stopped going to that area because of the herdsmen. Only a few still risk going to their farms.”
He added that Obuovia village, a nearby settlement within the same autonomous community, had been completely displaced from its farmlands, which are now allegedly occupied by herders.
Confirming the incident, the President General of Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community, Mr. Aaron Chidi Osu, said the matter had been officially reported to the Enugu State Police Command.
“It is no longer news that Fulani herdsmen have been attacking my community,” Osu said. “As things stand, my people live in fear. They can’t go to their farms anymore. We are begging the state government to intervene and put an end to these constant attacks.”
