Another building collapses in Lagos, one killed, eight rescued

LAGOS — The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the death of one person following the collapse of a three-storey building in the Apapa area of Lagos on Thursday.

According to the agency, eight other people were rescued alive from the debris.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said in a statement that emergency responders arrived at the scene around 11:09 a.m. after receiving distress calls.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that a three-storey building with a penthouse had collapsed at No. 28, Baale Alayabiagba Street, Alayabiagba community, Ajegunle, Apapa,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He explained that the cause of the collapse was still under investigation.

“Eight adult males were rescued and given first aid by the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being taken to Ajeromi General Hospital,” he said, adding that one adult male was recovered dead from the rubble.

Residents told officials that the structure had been undergoing manual demolition when it suddenly gave way, trapping workers underneath.

Teams from LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Lagos State Building Control Agency, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigeria Police were all involved in the rescue operation.

Search and recovery efforts were still ongoing as of the time of this report.
