For the second time in two days, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has lost another member in the House of Representatives to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
During plenary on Wednesday, Salisu Garba Koko, who represents Koko/Besse/Mayama Federal Constituency of Kebbi State, announced his defection to the APC in a letter read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.
Reasons for Defection
Koko cited a protracted crisis within the PDP as the reason for his decision to leave the party.
“The ongoing crisis in the PDP has made it difficult for me to continue as a member. It is in the best interest of my constituency to align with a party that ensures stability and development,” Koko stated in his letter.
Opposition’s Response
Reacting to the defection, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda dismissed Koko’s claim of a crisis within the PDP. He argued that political challenges exist in all parties and should not be used as an excuse for defection.
“While individuals may seek reasons to switch parties, it is misleading to suggest that the PDP is in a prolonged crisis,” Chinda said.
He urged the Speaker to declare the seat vacant in accordance with constitutional provisions, arguing that lawmakers who defect without a clear division within their party should seek a fresh mandate from their constituents.
Similarly, Ben Etanebene (LP, Delta) questioned whether the defectors would return to INEC to obtain a new certificate of return, considering that their original certificates bear the PDP’s name.
“The Constitution states clearly that when a member defects, their seat ‘shall’ be declared vacant. It is not optional,” Etanebene emphasized.
Speaker’s Position
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, however, maintained that only the courts have the power to declare a lawmaker’s seat vacant.
“This House will act based on the content of the letters submitted by members. Only the courts can declare a seat vacant, not the House,” Abbas said.
The defection marks another setback for the PDP, which has been struggling with internal party issues and increasing defections to the APC.
