APC Defends Tinubu Against Obasanjo’s Criticism on Reforms

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his negative comments on President Bola Tinubu’s reforms and the handling of the coup in Niger Republic. Obasanjo criticized Tinubu's subsidy removal and the floating of the naira, arguing that the policies were necessary but poorly executed, leading to economic hardship for Nigerians.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo expressed these views at a weekend colloquium in Abuja titled “Nigeria’s Development: Navigating the Way Out of the Current Economic Crisis and Insecurity.” He pointed out that the government's decisions have impoverished the economy and Nigerians.

Reacting to Obasanjo’s comments, APC National Director Bala Ibrahim dismissed the former president’s critique, suggesting that Obasanjo's consistent criticism of subsequent administrations might be a sign of senility. Ibrahim emphasized that Obasanjo has a history of attacking regimes since failing to secure a third term in office.

Ibrahim noted that Obasanjo’s criticisms are not new, highlighting that he has previously criticized Presidents Buhari and Jonathan. He argued that Obasanjo's own tenure did not fare better economically, questioning how Obasanjo could fault someone trying to improve the economy. Ibrahim stated that while he is not a spokesperson for Tinubu, he believes Obasanjo has consistently erred in his judgment of leadership.
