The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Nasarawa State, Aliyu Bello, has dismissed concerns over the defection of former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, from the APC to the Social Democratic Congress, insisting that the move will not affect the party’s chances in the 2027 general elections.

Adamu recently lost the APC governorship primary to Senator Ahmed Wadada, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District and is widely believed to enjoy the support of Governor Abdullahi Sule.

Speaking during a rally held at Angwan Gayam in Gayam Electoral Ward of Lafia Local Government Area on Tuesday, Bello appealed to supporters of the former police chief who remain in the APC to accept the outcome of the primary election peacefully, stressing that political power ultimately comes from God.

He also criticised supporters of the former IGP who have been publicly burning brooms—the symbol of the APC—as a sign of protest against the party.

According to Bello, such actions would not weaken the party or diminish its support base ahead of the next general elections.

“Brooms can be burnt, but the achievements and ideology of the APC cannot be destroyed,” he said.

He argued that the party’s strength in Nasarawa is rooted in the achievements recorded by Governor Abdullahi Sule and President Bola Tinubu, including infrastructure development, youth empowerment, employment opportunities, women inclusion, and the promotion of peace across the state.

“The people vote based on results and good governance, not just party symbols,” he added.

Bello warned against divisive politics and accused some politicians of attempting to create unnecessary tension simply because they lost out in the party’s internal process.

He challenged those protesting against the party to show evidence of what they had contributed to the development of the state when they previously held positions of influence.

Also speaking at the rally, the Deputy Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, Uba Arikya, said politics should focus on improving the lives of the people rather than encouraging insults and political bitterness.

A chieftain of the APC in the area, Sidi Ndagi, urged residents to support all APC candidates in the 2027 elections, from the presidency down to local positions.

He praised Governor Sule for his developmental efforts and advised him to remain focused on delivering more projects rather than being distracted by political opponents.

The rally attracted thousands of APC supporters from Gayam Ward, many of whom displayed party banners, posters and the APC symbol.
