The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in 16 out of the 18 chairmanship seats in the local government elections held in Ondo State.
Announcing the results at the headquarters of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) in Akure on Sunday, ODIEC Chairman Joseph Aeemo noted that elections were rescheduled in Ondo West LGA, while results from Owo LGA are still awaited.
Twelve political parties participated in the elections conducted on Saturday, January 18, 2025, following multiple postponements. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), however, boycotted the poll, citing doubts over ODIEC’s ability to conduct a credible election.
Participating parties included Action Alliance (AA), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), among others.
The last local government election in Ondo State was held on August 23, 2020, with the tenure of elected council officials expiring on August 22, 2023. Since then, the councils have been managed by civil servants.
The APC’s resounding win consolidates its influence in the state as the ruling party, despite PDP’s absence from the contest. Meanwhile, the electoral body reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness in future elections.
