Armed Bandits Extort N20 Million Monthly Tax from Benue Villagers

Bandits

In Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, armed bandits have imposed a staggering N20 million monthly tax on residents of Torough and nearby communities, instilling fear and compliance through coercive measures. According to reports, households are being forced to pay varying sums, with penalties for non-compliance severe enough to deter any resistance.

Residents, speaking anonymously due to safety concerns, revealed that the militia, led by a figure known as 'Full Fire', wields significant control over the region, enforcing their demands with deadly consequences for defiance. Despite the oppressive taxation, local authorities and security agencies have yet to effectively intervene, leaving villagers feeling trapped and vulnerable.

Confirming the situation, Ukum LGA's Caretaker Chairman, Mr. Victor Iorzaa, acknowledged the banditry's impact, noting ongoing efforts by state authorities and security forces to curtail their activities. Meanwhile, the state's Special Adviser on Internal Security, Joseph Har, assured that the government is actively pursuing the bandits, who he claims are increasingly on the run amid intensified security operations.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, stated that the command had not officially received reports on the matter, highlighting the complex security challenges in the area despite ongoing efforts to restore peace and order.
