In a significant leadership shift, Professor Chris Piwuna, a Consultant Psychiatrist and former Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, has been elected as the new National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Piwuna, who served as the immediate past Vice President of the union, emerged victorious over Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, held at the University of Benin in Edo State.
He succeeds Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, an Agriculture scholar from the University of Agriculture, Umudike, who led the union since May 2021 and was known for his confrontational stance during multiple national strikes.
The election outcome marks a possible pivot in ASUU’s leadership style and strategic posture, given Piwuna’s psychiatric background and administrative experience. An official communiqué confirming the result and outlining the union’s new direction is expected by Monday.
