ASUU: Over 400 Members Sacked for Advocating Rights

ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) revealed that over 400 members have been dismissed in the past 10 to 15 years for defending their rights and the university system's interests. ASUU attributes this persecution primarily to state-owned institutions, where governors, who are visitors to these institutions, do not tolerate dissenting views.

Speaking at a Leadership Training Workshop at Olabisi Onabanjo University, former UNILAG ASUU Chairman Dr. Dele Ashiru emphasized the union's commitment to fighting for its members' interests while maintaining ethical standards. He highlighted cases in Ambrose Ali University and Kogi State, where many members faced unjust termination, negatively impacting lecturers' morale.

Acting ASUU-OOU Chairman Dr. Wasiu Olooto explained that the workshop aimed to equip new executives with the necessary leadership skills and understanding of their roles. Additionally, ASUU urged President Bola Tinubu to sign the Nimi Briggs renegotiated draft to bolster public universities' global recognition.

ASUU branch chairmen Muhammad Mustapha and Saidu Abubakar underscored unresolved issues such as renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, withheld salaries, and underfunding of universities. They criticized the continued use of the IPPIS platform, which ASUU argues undermines university autonomy, and called for the immediate release of promised funds for the universities' improvement.
