Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, has expressed serious concerns about the ongoing acts of banditry and terrorism in Nigeria. His comments come in response to a recent attack by bandits on Yargoje village in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, which resulted in the deaths of 20 people.
In a statement posted on his social media handle, Atiku lamented that banditry and terrorism attacks in the country have become routine, and criticized the government for appearing helpless and nonchalant despite the significant annual budget allocated for defence.
He expressed sadness over the attack in Katsina State, where bandits ambushed a police armoured personnel carrier, killing four police officers and two members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps. Atiku called on the federal government to prioritize the protection of citizens' lives and property.
"I am saddened by reports of the attack on Yargoje village in Kankara LGA of Katsina State, which claimed scores of lives and the kidnap of vulnerable women and children," Atiku wrote. "Most worrisome to me is that these acts of banditry and terrorism have become routine, with the government seemingly helpless and nonchalant about it despite the enormous annual budget for defence."
He concluded by sympathizing with the families of the victims and reiterating his call on the government to fulfill its responsibility of protecting the lives and property of citizens.
