Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has thrown his weight behind the resolutions reached by the Christian Association of Nigeria during its 2026 National Church Leaders Summit, particularly the call for urgent reforms to tackle Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, Atiku said he shares the concerns expressed by Christian leaders over the growing insecurity across the country and sympathised with Nigerians who have been affected by violent attacks, kidnappings and other security threats.

He noted that CAN’s demand for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture aligns with positions he has consistently maintained regarding the performance of the current administration.

According to him, proposals such as improved intelligence gathering, stronger collaboration among security agencies, enhanced operational efficiency and greater accountability in the fight against terrorism, banditry and violent crimes are necessary steps toward restoring safety across the country.

Atiku also commended Christian leaders from different denominations for presenting a united front on the issue, describing their intervention as a timely reminder to political leaders of their responsibility to protect citizens.

He praised the decision by CAN to declare a three-day national mourning period, saying it should serve as a moment of reflection for leaders at all levels of government, especially those currently in positions of authority.

The former vice president argued that insecurity has continued to affect Nigerians regardless of religion or ethnicity and called for broader national support in addressing the crisis.

He further urged Islamic organisations and Muslim leaders to join the growing calls for decisive action against insecurity, stressing that the challenge is a national problem that requires collective efforts.

Atiku concluded by calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take the concerns raised by CAN seriously and move beyond public statements to implement practical measures that would improve security and protect lives across the country.

He said Nigerians expect concrete results and urged the Federal Government to respond decisively to the growing concerns of citizens and religious leaders.
