Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the economic hardship and insecurity plaguing Nigeria. In a statement commemorating Democracy Day, Atiku asserted that the past nine years under the APC administration have brought extreme poverty and unprecedented violence to the people.
However, Atiku also blamed the opposition parties, including his own Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for failing to unite and form a coalition capable of unseating the APC. He argued that the opposition's lack of unity and failure to present a compelling governance plan are the biggest threats to Nigeria's democracy.

Atiku praised Nigeria's 25 years of uninterrupted democracy as an unprecedented achievement worth celebrating. He paid tribute to the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists like MKO Abiola and his wife Kudirat, Shehu Yar'Adua, and Alfred Rewane.
The former presidential candidate insisted that there is no substitute for democracy as a form of government. He called on all stakeholders, including the political class and civil society, to work towards sustaining Nigeria's democracy.
Atiku's remarks came as he and other dignitaries, such as Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, were expected to attend the June 12 Democracy Day celebration in Lagos.
