Bauchi Vendor Arrested for Allegedly Raping Mentally Ill Boy

The Bauchi Police Command has apprehended a 23-year-old man, Sanusi Umar, suspected of raping a 10-year-old boy with mental health issues. The incident occurred behind the AIB filling station in Kofar Ran, where Umar, a vendor selling garden eggs, tigernuts, and other items, allegedly assaulted the minor after luring him with N30 worth of sweets. The arrest was made by operatives attached to Operation Restore Peace (ORP) on March 28, 2024, around 9:00 PM.

According to the Command's spokesperson, Ahmed Wakili, preliminary investigations revealed that Umar, originally from Jingino village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa state, had been selling his goods at the same filling station for about two years. Taking advantage of the boy's unsound mental condition, Umar allegedly removed both their trousers and assaulted the victim from behind.

The victim immediately reported the incident to the filling station's manager, who then alerted the authorities. Both the victim and the suspect were taken to ATBU Teaching Hospital in Bauchi for medical examination. Wakili stated that the investigation is ongoing and once completed, Umar will be charged to court.
