Bayelsa

A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday between Ekeni and Ukubie communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, where a passenger boat named *Godbless Dickson* caught fire and sank, leading to the suspected deaths of many on board.

The boat, carrying about 64 passengers, including traders transporting goods like garri, beans, and rice, was heading towards Yenagoa when the incident happened. Several passengers managed to swim to safety, but the exact number of those who died or survived remains unclear as rescue operations continue.

Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Bayelsa State Chapter, Ipigansi Ogoniba, indicated that it is difficult to provide an accurate death toll at this time, emphasizing that estimates of the number of casualties are speculative until the rescue efforts conclude.

It is believed that the fire may have started due to the improper handling of petrol near the onboard engine.

Odede Denikpete Tina, Chairperson of the Association of Coastal and Waterways Communities of Nigeria, Bayelsa State, attributed the disaster to the failure of boat operators to adhere to safety regulations, particularly the use of life jackets. She also called on the state government to improve road connectivity to riverine communities to reduce reliance on water transport.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident and noted that about 20 lives were feared lost. He assured that rescue operations were ongoing to find any remaining survivors.
