Bayelsa State Ramps Up Preparations for Potential Flooding

Bayelsa

The Bayelsa State government has instructed its Ministry of Environment and the Sanitation Authority to intensify efforts in response to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency's (NiMeT) warnings of potential widespread flooding. This directive was issued by Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo during the 138th State Executive Council meeting held in Yenagoa.

Ewhrudjakpo emphasized the importance of being fully prepared, noting that Bayelsa is the key exit point where waters from the River Niger and Benue flow into the Atlantic Ocean. He tasked the Environment Ministry with ensuring that natural water canals are thoroughly cleared to prevent flooding and environmental pollution. The deputy governor also urged citizens to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal in drainages.

Despite predictions that this year’s flooding may not reach the levels seen in 2012 or 2022, Ewhrudjakpo stressed the need for vigilance and preventive measures. He also called on local government councils to support the state’s efforts and commended the State Emergency Management Agency for its readiness.

In addition to flood preparedness, the deputy governor thanked Bayelsans for their continued support of Governor Douye Diri's administration and invited them to the state’s annual Thanksgiving service scheduled for November 2, 2024.
