Chelsea Close to £30m Liam Delap Signing, Set to Feature at Club World Cup

Chelsea

Chelsea FC are on the brink of finalising the signing of highly rated forward Liam Delap in a deal worth £30 million, with only final formalities remaining before the transfer is confirmed.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday that Chelsea are ready to activate Delap’s release clause, and final negotiations between the club and the player’s representatives are nearing completion.

“Chelsea are closing in on Liam Delap deal as details of the long-term contract are being completed with his agents,” Romano posted. “Enzo Maresca appreciation + UCL football made the difference as Chelsea are set to activate £30m release clause. #CFC just wait for formal communication now.”

Delap is expected to complete the move in time to join Chelsea’s squad for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States later this month.

The 21-year-old forward impressed last season under Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town, scoring 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances despite the club’s eventual relegation. His performances reignited interest from his former club, Manchester City, who held a £40 million buy-back clause, but chose not to re-sign him.

Instead, Delap is poised to reunite with new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, under whom he previously worked during his development at Manchester City. The Blues’ return to UEFA Champions League football also played a significant role in convincing the striker to choose Stamford Bridge as his next destination.

The deal, once officially confirmed, will continue Chelsea’s aggressive youth-focused recruitment strategy under Todd Boehly’s ownership, as they look to build a dynamic squad capable of competing across all competitions.
