The Federal High Court in Lagos State has convicted Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, a medical doctor and founder of MedContour Services Ltd., for conducting a failed plastic surgery that led to the death of Nneka Onwuzuligbo in 2020. The conviction was disclosed by Babatunde Irukera, former Director-General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), via a tweet on Friday.
Irukera expressed his pride in having personally prosecuted Dr. Adepoju and her medical practice, emphasizing the importance of accountability in society. "Today is a day of pride for me that I personally prosecuted Anu Adepoju and her medical practice. Though I’ve left, the case has ended in a conviction strengthening the accountability framework for all in society, professionals or otherwise. This is how society should work and grow," Irukera tweeted.
Dr. Adepoju and her practice were convicted on all five counts charged by the FCCPC. Irukera highlighted the significance of the conviction for consumers of professional services, stating, "The wheel of justice may grind slowly, but we must see it through. What we need are enforced with audacity and the will to prosecute competently and diligently. Good day for consumers of professional services."
In 2020, the FCCPC arraigned Dr. Adepoju on five counts before Justice Mohammed Liman. The charges included accusations of shunning summons by the agency to appear and produce certain documents related to the case. This conviction marks a significant step in enforcing consumer protection and ensuring professional accountability in Nigeria.
