Crisis at LASU: Staff Unions Shut Down Campus with Indefinite Strike Ahead of Exams

The Lagos State University (LASU) has been thrown into turmoil as staff unions declared an indefinite strike, effective immediately, over unresolved grievances with the university management.

The Joint Action Committee — comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) — made the announcement in a letter dated July 31, 2025, and addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.

The letter, obtained by our correspondent on Friday, was jointly signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare and Secretary Dr. Sylvester O. Idowu, as well as SSANU-LASU Chairman Oluwaseyi Lawal and Secretary Waheed Majekodunmi.

According to the statement, the indefinite strike commenced on Thursday, July 31, 2025, and affects all staff members across the university's campuses, including the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, and LASU Epe campus.

The unions directed all staff to withdraw their services and vacate their official duty posts immediately, pending the resolution of their demands by relevant authorities.

“The strike action will be in force INDEFINITELY until all the demands of staff members are met,” the release stated. “We thank you for your kind gesture and support always. Please accept the assurances of the Unions’ kindest regards.”

This development comes just days before the university’s 2024/2025 second semester examinations were scheduled to begin next Monday, leaving students and academic activities in limbo.
