Cristiano Ronaldo made history in the Saudi Pro League by breaking the record for the most goals scored in a single season. The 39-year-old forward achieved this feat by scoring his 34th and 35th goals in Al Nassr’s final game of the campaign, surpassing the previous record of 34 goals set by Abderrazak Hamdallah in the 2018-19 season.
After the match, Ronaldo tweeted, "I don’t follow the records, the records follow me." He scored his goals in Al Nassr’s 4-2 victory over Al Ittihad, with a goal just before half-time and another with a header in the 69th minute.
Despite Ronaldo's remarkable performance, Al Nassr finished the season in second place, 14 points behind champions Al Hilal. Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in December 2022, has been part of an influx of overseas players to the Saudi league attracted by lucrative contracts.
The Portuguese star, who has had a stellar career with clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United, will now turn his attention to the 2016 Euros, where he will represent Portugal. Ronaldo has been selected for the squad for this year’s edition in Germany, marking his 11th international tournament. He holds the record for the most capped player in men’s international football with 206 appearances and has scored 128 goals.
