The Nigeria Customs Service has released 15 trucks loaded with grains, which were intercepted last week at the Sokoto State border en route to neighbouring countries. The trucks were intercepted along the Gwadabawa-Illela Road in Sokoto and have now been handed over to their owners in compliance with President Bola Tinubu's directive.
The release of the trucks was confirmed by Abdullahi Abubakar, the spokesman for the Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command of the NCS, in a statement on Tuesday. The Comptroller of the Command, Kamal Mohammed, oversaw the handover of the trucks to their owners at the command's headquarters in Sokoto.
Mohammed urged the traders to ensure that the grains reach Nigerian markets, emphasizing the Customs Service's commitment to combating smuggling. He stated that the addition of new patrol vehicles to the command's fleet would enhance efforts to make the border region less hospitable to smugglers.
In response, Alhaji Dahiru Ladan, the Secretary of the Grain Sellers Association of Sokoto, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for showing mercy and assured that the union would ensure the grains are sold in Nigerian markets, as requested by the President.
