Deadly Terrorist Attack Hits Military Base in Borno, Soldiers Killed

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that both terrorists and military personnel were killed following a coordinated attack on the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State.

The assault, which occurred in the early hours of April 9, 2026, saw insurgents attempt to breach the military base. According to the military, troops under Operation Hadin Kai responded with strong resistance, forcing the attackers to retreat.

While the military acknowledged casualties among its personnel, it did not confirm reports that the Brigade Commander, Brig Gen Oseni Braimah, was among those killed. However, the Chairman of Kaga Local Government Area, Zanna Ajimi, claimed the commander died in the attack.

Residents described the incident as intense, with insurgents reportedly using sophisticated weapons, setting combat vehicles ablaze, and burning nearby shops. A local resident said although no civilian deaths had been confirmed, several soldiers were feared killed.

In an official statement, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Michael Onoja, praised the troops for their courage and professionalism, noting that the insurgents were “decisively engaged” and forced to abandon their mission. He added that some soldiers paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

The military described the attack as a desperate move by insurgents who have suffered heavy losses in recent operations. Clearance operations are currently ongoing to track down fleeing fighters and prevent them from regrouping.
