Delta State Police Command Neutralizes Suspected Kidnapper in Gun Duel

The Delta State Police Command has reported the successful neutralization of a suspected kidnapper, Joel Joseph, during a gun battle in the Inene community, Ughelli area. The Command's Spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Asaba.

Edafe stated, “The special squad deployed by CP Abaniwonda Olufemi to Ughelli North LGA has been conducting intelligence-led policing, resulting in the arrest of over nine suspected kidnappers and the recovery of firearms.”

On May 16, 2024, the team achieved another significant success when they stormed Inene community in Ughelli North LGA, Delta State, targeting Joel Joseph, the leader of a notorious kidnapping syndicate. Upon encountering the operatives, Joseph opened fire, resulting in a gun duel. Joseph sustained severe gunshot injuries and was taken to the General Hospital Ughelli, where he later died during treatment. An AK-47 rifle loaded with ten rounds of live ammunition was recovered from him. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of his gang.

In a separate operation, the police arrested a 43-year-old man, Friday Emmanuel, for possessing 875 rounds of live cartridges concealed in a sack wrapped with pieces of cloth. This arrest occurred on May 16, 2024, when operatives of Safe Delta deployed to Head-Bridge, Asaba, intercepted a white Toyota Hiace Bus (REG. NO: AYB573XC) driven by Emmanuel. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed the concealed ammunition.

SP Edafe assured the public of the command's commitment to curbing crime and enhancing safety in Delta communities, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to create a secure environment.
