Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to provide credible leadership and respond to Nigeria’s deepening political and governance challenges.
In a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye declared his immediate withdrawal from all party activities.
The letter, which was shared publicly on Thursday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, read:
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement.
This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
Melaye, who was the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 Kogi State governorship election, said his decision came after “deep reflection” on the party’s direction and ongoing leadership crisis.
“In good conscience, I can no longer continue to participate in or support the party’s agenda,” he wrote, asking that his resignation be recognised as a complete and immediate withdrawal from all PDP engagements.
While Melaye did not indicate whether he would join another political party, his exit marks a significant moment in the PDP's internal crisis, particularly in Kogi State where he has remained one of its most prominent figures.
He concluded his letter by thanking the party for the platform it provided him during his time as a member.
