ECOWAS Chairman Tinubu Applauds ‘Triumphant’ Senegal Election, Vows Support for Democracy

President Bola Tinubu, in his capacity as ECOWAS Chairman, expressed satisfaction with the recent presidential election in Senegal and the general elections in Liberia, citing them as positive steps for democracy in the region. He extended congratulations to Senegal's President-elect, Mr. Bassirou Faye, and commended incumbent President Macky Sall for overseeing a peaceful and transparent election process.

Tinubu's congratulatory messages were conveyed in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale. Faye emerged victorious in Senegal's presidential election held on March 24, 2024, with over 50% of the votes, according to preliminary results. Tinubu praised the candidates for their sportsmanship, particularly noting the humility of Faye in welcoming the other candidates' actions.

As ECOWAS Chairman, Tinubu highlighted the significance of these elections in bolstering democracy in West Africa. He emphasized the importance of good governance, justice, and fairness in nurturing democracy. Tinubu also assured Senegal of Nigeria's support and best wishes, recognizing the successful conduct of elections as a positive development for the region.
