Edo Assembly Orders Probe into Deputy Governor Amid Impeachment Drama

The Edo State House of Assembly has instructed the state Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to establish a seven-member panel to probe the allegations against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu. The assembly has accused Shaibu of misconduct and the unauthorized disclosure of government information.

The panel's mandate is to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and provide appropriate recommendations. The directive was issued during a brief session chaired by the Speaker, RT Hon Blessing Agbebaku. Earlier in the month, the assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Shaibu, citing constitutional violations.

Shaibu, however, denies receiving any impeachment notice from the assembly. Despite attempts to physically serve him, Shaibu claims he has been out of the state since March 3. His supporters allege that the impeachment move is politically motivated, stemming from Shaibu's interest in succeeding Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Shaibu recently emerged as the governorship candidate in a parallel primary election held on February 22, 2024.
