Members of the Edo State Assembly have issued an impeachment notice to Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu. Shaibu, a former member of the House of Representatives and ex-Majority Leader of the Edo Assembly, has been given seven days to respond to allegations against him.

The rift between Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki and Shaibu, both prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stems from a disagreement over the legitimate PDP gubernatorial candidate in Edo.

Obaseki is backing Lagos-based lawyer Asue Ighodalo, who won the party's gubernatorial primary election through an indirect process at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin. Meanwhile, Shaibu emerged as a factional candidate through a parallel primary held at his official residence on Commercial Avenue in Benin.
