Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has issued a directive to freeze all state-owned bank accounts, effective immediately, pending further notice. In a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the Governor warned commercial banks and leaders of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to comply without delay, cautioning that noncompliance will result in severe consequences.
The directive mandates that all funds in state accounts remain untouched during the freeze, as Governor Okpebholo aims to conduct investigations and reconciliations before determining next steps. Heads of MDAs were specifically instructed to ensure absolute adherence to the order to maintain fiscal control and transparency.
Additionally, Governor Okpebholo has reversed the controversial name change of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges back to the Ministry of Works, noting the name was introduced during the previous administration of Godwin Obaseki, which he criticized for lacking visible infrastructure achievements. Okpebholo argued that the former name was "absurd," given that no major road or bridge projects were completed.
In the days ahead, Okpebholo hinted at further reviews and potential reversals of previous administration decisions. The Governor expressed that his actions are aimed at enhancing governance and restoring integrity to Edo State’s institutions.
