The security post at the private residence of the impeached Edo State deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, was demolished without notification by a team from Government House, Benin, and Edo Ministry of Roads and Bridges, just a week after his removal from office. The post, located near the Benin Golf Course in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), used to be bustling with activity during Shaibu's tenure but became deserted after his removal.
The demolition team, accompanied by fully-armed policemen and operatives of the Edo Security Network, pulled down the structures with a bulldozer around 5 p.m. Witnesses, including a female resident of Shaibu's compound, noted the lack of prior notice to the former deputy governor. They described the action as barbaric and ridiculous.
Some of Shaibu's neighbors and passersby, while identifying the demolition team as members from Government House, Benin, expressed displeasure with the exercise but chose not to be named. Shaibu's Chief Press Secretary, Ebomhiana Musa, declined to comment on the demolition.
Shaibu, who was impeached, remains optimistic about receiving justice at the Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo. He seeks redress for his illegal removal ahead of the September 21, 2024, governorship election in the Southsouth state.
