Edo State Assembly Escalates Impeachment Process Against Deputy Governor Shaibu

Edo State

The Edo State House Assembly has decided to publish the impeachment notice against Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu in national newspapers after he allegedly refused to acknowledge the notice served to him last week. The lawmakers began impeachment proceedings against Shaibu last Wednesday, citing accusations of perjury and leaking government secrets. This move is seen as the latest development in the ongoing rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Tensions between Shaibu and Obaseki have been evident since last year when Shaibu expressed interest in running for governor in this year's election. The House made the decision to publish the notice in national dailies during Monday's plenary session, following Shaibu's apparent rejection of the impeachment notice. Speaker Blessing Agbebaku directed the House Clerk, Yahaya Omogbai, to publish the notice in the Nigerian Observer newspaper and other national newspapers, stating that Shaibu's rejection necessitated serving him by substitution.

"It is clear that the deputy governor has rejected the impeachment notice served on him by the House," said Speaker Agbebaku. "The House will serve him by substitution by publishing the letter in three national dailies, The Observer inclusive."
