Edo State Speaker Suspends Three Lawmakers Amidst Juju Scare Allegations

Edo

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has unilaterally suspended three lawmakers amidst allegations of a juju scare in the Assembly complex and an alleged plot to impeach Agbebaku and other principal officers.

The suspended lawmakers are Donald Okogbe (PDP, Akoko-Edo II), Bright Iyamu (PDP, Orhionmwon II), and Adeh Isibor (All Progressives Congress, APC, Esan Northeast I).

Agbebaku cited external influences on the lawmakers, accusing them of causing chaos and attempting to remove the Assembly's leadership. She claimed that on May 1, 2024, individuals brought native doctors into the Assembly complex at midnight, performed demonic incantations, and left charms, leading to a tense atmosphere.

The suspension led to tension among members, with the affected lawmakers protesting, stating that the Speaker does not have the authority to unilaterally suspend them and insisting on a vote by the Assembly members.

To calm the situation, Agbebaku adjourned the plenary. The incident has sparked discussions about due process and the internal dynamics of the Edo State House of Assembly.
