The Media Office of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of acting with desperation and political motives in its prosecution of the ex-governor over alleged N8.2 billion fraud. In a statement released on Wednesday by Director Ohiare Michael, Bello's team criticized the EFCC’s handling of the case, labeling it as part of a deliberate campaign to damage Bello’s reputation.
Michael pointed to what he called "procedural blunders" by the EFCC, including a statement titled *"Yahaya Bello Must Have His Day in Court"*, which he claims reflects a political agenda rather than a pursuit of justice. He also referenced the events of September 18, when Bello voluntarily submitted himself to the EFCC but was not detained, followed by what the media office called an overnight raid on the Kogi Government Lodge.
The statement questioned the agency’s intentions, asking why the EFCC was engaging in public actions that appear more focused on embarrassment than due process. “If genuinely interested in prosecution, why not arraign Bello on the next adjourned date? Why embarrass the country to satisfy collaborators’ egos?” Michael asked.
He further asserted that Bello would face the court in accordance with the rule of law, adding that the EFCC should not dictate the terms outside of legal frameworks.
