EFCC and ICPC Recover Over N277 Billion, Secure 3,468 Convictions in 2024

Nigeria's leading anti-corruption agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), achieved remarkable milestones in 2024, recovering over N277.685 billion, $105.966 million, and securing 3,468 convictions.

 

Key Achievements:

EFCC:

  • Recovered N248 billion, $105 million, and 753 duplexes.
  • Secured 3,455 convictions as of October 2024.
  • Implemented reforms under Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede, including the launch of EFCC 97.3FM for public education and the creation of the Fraud Risk Assessment and Control (FRAC) department.
  • Strengthened international collaborations, recovering assets for foreign fraud victims in partnership with the FBI and Canadian Royal Mounted Police.
  • Prosecuted high-profile cases involving four former governors, three former ministers, and a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, for money laundering and other financial crimes.

ICPC:

  • Recovered N29.685 billion, $966,900, and restrained N10.8 billion from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
  • Tracked 1,500 constituency projects nationwide through its Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Initiative (CEPTI).
  • Investigated 243 cases, with 63 in court and 13 convictions.
  • Played a key role in Nigeria's re-election to the GlobE Network Steering Committee, a global anti-corruption body.

NFIU:

  • Leveraged AI-driven innovations to enhance financial intelligence.
  • Trained regional FIUs on Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) standards.
  • Contributed to Nigeria’s efforts to exit the FATF grey list by 2025.

NDLEA:

  • Arrested 14,480 individuals, including 15 drug barons, and seized 2.37 million kilograms of illicit drugs.
  • Secured 2,867 convictions and rehabilitated 6,655 individuals under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative.

The Director of Legal Services at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Zakari Mijinyawa, described these achievements as “unprecedented milestones,” reinforcing Nigeria's commitment to combating corruption, financial crimes, and drug abuse.
