The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC), on Thursday expanded its inquiry into foreign exchange transactions under the tenure of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, with a search operation at the Dangote Group's headquarters in Lagos.
In November 2023, the Dangote Group refuted allegations of forex malpractices and money laundering to the tune of $3.4 billion.
The EFCC operatives sought documents related to forex allocations from 2015 to June 2023, when Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu, followed by his arrest by the Department of State Services.
The ongoing investigation encompasses other prominent companies that received forex at the official CBN rate in the period when Nigeria maintained multiple exchange rates until June 2023.
“It is an ongoing investigation. Nothing has been concluded yet,” disclosed a source at the Lagos office of the EFCC.
Some staff at Dangote Group also confirmed to newsmen that EFCC agents were at their office on Thursday.
They, however, disclosed that the interaction was cordial as they provided the documents requested by the anti-graft agency.
