The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an investigation into 11 individuals suspected of oil theft, along with the vessel MT SAISNIL II, which was apprehended by the Nigerian Navy. This development was confirmed by the commission's spokesperson, Mr. Dele Oyewole, in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to Oyewole, the suspects and the vessel were handed over to the EFCC by the Nigerian Navy, specifically the NNS Beecroft, Apapa, Lagos. The vessel and its crew were intercepted and detained on Feb. 7, 2024, by naval officers.

The suspects are believed to have been engaged in illegal oil bunkering and Automatic Identification System (AIS) violations at the Abo Oilfield, located in the Ogogoro Community of Ondo State. Oyewole stated that the suspects will be prosecuted once the EFCC's operatives in its Lagos Command conclude their investigations.

The EFCC's investigation into the matter underscores the government's commitment to combating oil theft and related offenses in Nigeria. The collaboration between the EFCC and the Nigerian Navy demonstrates a concerted effort to address illicit activities in the country's oil sector.
