The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed its readiness to take former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to court over allegations of fraud amounting to N8.2 billion. In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale emphasized that Bello, like other indicted officials, must face trial.
Oyewale stressed that the anti-graft agency has compiled substantial evidence and is eager to present its case in court. He reiterated that attempts to derail the investigation or prosecution of the case would not succeed, as the EFCC remains firm in its commitment to holding all individuals accountable under the law.
"Bello must have his day in court, no matter the recourse to blackmail, appeal to public sympathy, or acts of brigandage," Oyewale stated, underscoring the EFCC’s "no sacred cow" policy. The commission is prepared to prove its case before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja, where Bello’s legal team has committed to presenting him for arraignment.
The EFCC also acknowledged the challenges posed by corruption fighting back but assured the public that it would not be distracted by efforts to turn the case into a spectacle or a "theatre of the absurd."
The agency remains determined to ensure that justice is served and the law takes its course in the charges filed against the former governor.
