Brace for daily blackouts. That’s the message from Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) prepares to shut down a key high-voltage transmission line for urgent maintenance beginning Monday, July 28, 2025.
In a public notice issued Friday, EKEDC announced that residents under its network will face daily load shedding and power interruptions from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through Thursday, August 21. The disruption stems from planned repairs on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, a critical power corridor supplying much of Lagos and adjoining areas.
“This planned outage by our partner, Transmission Company of Nigeria, will impact supply across our entire coverage area,” EKEDC stated. “We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appeal to our valued customers for patience.”
Although the company did not list specific neighbourhoods, similar outages in the past have affected Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Lekki, Apapa, Festac, Surulere, and other districts serviced by EKEDC.
The transmission line work is part of a broader national infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving grid stability and minimizing energy losses—a persistent issue in Nigeria’s electricity supply chain.
Residents and business owners are advised to:
-
Plan energy use wisely
-
Limit consumption during peak hours
-
Explore alternative power sources such as generators, inverters, and solar systems
-
Monitor EKEDC’s platforms for real-time updates
The planned repair underscores Nigeria’s ongoing struggle to balance energy demand with aging infrastructure, and signals yet another test for consumers already grappling with high fuel and energy costs.
