Police operatives have arrested a young man holding a knife during a protest against Nigeria’s severe cost of living crisis, which is gaining momentum across the country. The arrest took place near the National Stadium in Abuja.
The protest, themed #EndBadGovernance and “10 Days of Rage,” has seen growing crowds rallying against economic hardships. The man, dressed in a wine and white T-shirt, appeared terrified as police questioned him about the knife, surrounded by an angry crowd.
In response to the unrest, police in Abuja have been dispersing protesters with teargas canisters. Efforts by President Bola Tinubu and some ministers to dissuade the protesters from starting the nationwide marches have been unsuccessful.
The surge in inflation followed Tinubu's decision to end the petrol subsidy and float the national currency in 2023, exacerbating the cost of living crisis and fueling the ongoing demonstrations.
